Crank the Bass Bots

Bass Bots was a rebranding project that involved taking an assignment from our sophomore year of college and recreating it with a fresh new look. In my case I chose a music shop I had designed called Bass Bots. I knew that this project was going to be the perfect opportunity to bring new light to this old project. It did really well as a sophomore, but as a junior I felt that branding and overall vibe was just completely off for the kind of product.

Initial Research

Considering that I had already done this project once before, my research this time was less focused on the products and how they’re marketed, and instead focused on the new visual aesthetic that I wanted to push for the project. My early designs for the first project were very clean and almost corporate. This time I want to completely shift gears and create a more wild and stimulating visual appearance. I wanted to get rid of the super clean look and go for something more akin to something like graffiti.

Type and Illustrations

Type in this project was kept very simple outside of the logo mark, mostly as a way to not be too overwhelming to a point where the collaterals aren’t actually legible. This was the one part of the project I tried to keep simple and clean.

In terms of illustrations, this is where I wanted to get a bit more wild. I began by just creating a massive array of illustrations that fit the general aesthetic and then as I started to move them to fit within my designated grid I would see new opportunities to really make all of these pieces start fitting together into a coherent design.

Final Result and Closing Thoughts

This project was very well received across all of my professors and was generally speaking a success. That said, I always like to find a way to improve each project, and for me I think the small improvement I would make for this would be to push contrast a bit more by probably adding a second color. As it stands now, I let the project be and took it as a great lesson moving forward.
