Van’s Advertising Campaign

For my final project in motion graphics, I had to chose a company and create a four piece advertising campaign. I chose Vans for two main reasons. First, I just like their products. Second, it was style I felt I was lacking somewhat in my portfolio and wanted to use this project as a way to try a new grungy kind of design work.

Initial Research

Most of the research came in two parts. The first part was researching the style of Van’s. I based most of that research in how they phrase all of their collateral and what sort of visual styles would stick out to me. This led me to the aesthetic of the Van’s Warped Tour, which would inspire the overall look of the campaign.

Videos and Script

Getting videos for this campaign was surprisingly really easy this project, with a massive amount of skating footage to work with. In general, I looked for two main kinds of footage for the campaign. First was obviously footage of skaters doing all sorts of tricks. Second, I was a bit more broad in that I wanted to capture a sort of urban city feeling in the campaign and so I went to find clips of things like subway stations, graffiti, and regular city life all in one go.

The hard part was the script, with it going through a couple revisions before actually going into recording the voiceovers. I wanted to go for the Van’s philosophy of not fitting in, and so I made that the whole focus of the scripts in each ad. That said, I am not great on voiceovers and I definitely still could work on getting the voiceovers perfect for the whole campaign.

Final Result and Closing Thoughts

This final result of the project was generally well received and after a few slight tweaks to the final result, it came out really well. The main takeaway from this project is that script making takes a lot more time than I gave it credit for both in terms of messaging and rhythm.
